Dear Columbia Community:

I’d like to personally welcome you back to campus and take a moment to let you know about some of CUIT’s exciting projects and initiatives that will make computing on campus faster, easier and safer. We continue to work with faculty, students and staff to meet your needs and improve our services.

New CourseWorks

Beginning in September, New CourseWorks, powered by Sakai, will be used in 800 courses. This fall, students and faculty in the Medical Center schools, in the School of Social Work, and in a number of departments across Morningside will benefit from such Sakai features as calendaring, robust file management, collaboration tools and a personal “My Workspace”.  More courses will transition to New CourseWorks over the next three semesters.

More Electronic Classrooms

On the Morningside campus, CUIT and Facilities have built 17 additional electronic classrooms for Arts & Sciences that will be used this semester. These classrooms offer state-of-the-art technology to enhance students’ learning experiences. There are currently 86 CUIT eclassrooms with another 50 to be added over the next two years.

Additional Wireless Support in Residence Halls

In our ongoing effort to increase Internet accessibility for all members of the Columbia community, we have added full wireless support to four more residence halls, Shapiro, East Campus, 47 Claremont and Harmony Hall.  We now have wireless in  a total of 12 residence halls, with plans to add wireless to the remainder next summer. To see a list of wireless residence halls, go here.

CU Secure Encrypted Wireless Network

CUIT continues to make security one of our top priorities, and we encourage you to set up connections to our secure wireless network for all devices you use to connect to the Internet. Our secure network provides encryption for all online interactions. To set up access to the secure network, go to http://cuit.columbia.edu/wireless.

Enhanced UNI Password Reset Security and Self-Service

In addition, we have created a new process for setting up and resetting passwords for UNI account holders.  This service allows users to reset their own passwords by selecting and answering several challenge questions, a feature that will make managing your UNI easier and more secure.

New, More Modern www.cuit.columbia.edu

While you are securing your account and Internet access, I encourage you to explore the new look and feel of CUIT’s website. We are continuing to redesign the entire site to make it easier for you to find the services we offer and get answers to your questions.

The last year has been a busy time for CUIT, and we are now focused on several upcoming initiatives that will benefit everyone at Columbia. Stay tuned for announcements about new ways in which we are improving your technology experience on campus.

Sincerely,

Candace C. Fleming
