Embedded Research Computing Support

CUIT staff providing on-site research computing support at Columbia research groups or centers.

CUIT’s Research Computing Services (RCS) includes staff who act as embedded research computing support to Columbia research groups or centers.

A Research Systems Engineer or similar position reports on a day-to-day basis to the head of the research group or center, and has an office on-site. The embedded staff person is a member of Research Computing Services (RCS) team, is supervised by the RCS Manager, and meets weekly with the RCS Manager and team. The services provided are tailored to the needs of the research group or center, and may include research computing support tasks such as desktop/laptop support for researchers involving specialized research applications, guidance on computing-related portions of grant proposals, and assistance with restricted or sensitive research data issues.

Departments can also have a more specialized service with RCS staff embedded in a department.

Participation in this service is subject to reaching an agreement with CUIT regarding the job responsibilities of the embedded research computing support position. The cost of the service is the embedded staff salary plus a 10% administrative fee annually. Personnel management conforms to CUIT policies and procedures.
